Professor of Psychology backs practice for lasting help
San Francisco, CA — (SBWIRE) — 05/15/2013 — Hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been a topic of debate for some time, as there has been much back-and-forth about how much of it can be proven in regards to its effect.
Both forms of hypnosis forms do have roots in science, with plenty of evidence the support its claims, despite some harsh opposition on the opposing side. While the American Medical Association seems to balk on taking a clear stance, the AMA reported that hypnotherapy has been recognized as an ancillary option when dealing with needed headway in particular cases. When it comes to particular illnesses, hypnosis does seem to hold some scientific grounding.
In 2001, the British Psychological Society commissioned a team of psychologists who published a report noted that hypnosis was a proven therapeutic effort. The report stated that there were a wide range of issues that the form of psychology could assist in handling. Such cases included anxiety, pain, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, as well as weight reduction or gain for those with eating disorders or dysmorphia.
In 2007, the American Health Magazine indicated that certain afflictions of the mind were easier tackled with hypnotherapy over the common forms of psychoanalysis or behavior therapy. A German study looked at over 440 studies and supported the claim, noting that almost two-thirds of of patients who suffered from stress, anxiety, or chronic pain saw benefits.
Sanjay Paul, who is a psychology instructor at a handful of universities, noted that hypnosis is simply allowing one to comfortably fall into a placid state of consciousness. By doing so, experts can gain access to the subconscious or a more pliable state of being. Paul notes that nearly 90% of all actions are begun in the subconscious. He goes on to note that hypnosis holds the capability for creating direct change that can be lasting by “cleaning the bottom of the mental fish tank.”
